The classic debate in psychology, “nature vs. nurture,” asks what truly shapes us: is it our genetics (nature) or our environment (nurture) such as the socio-cultural influences ? Many believe it’s a 50-50 split, i.e, we’re equally influenced by our inherent traits and the world around us – our culture, family, the genes we inherit, and the situations we face.

This thought really came alive for me one morning on a walk when I saw a Banyan tree. Its trunk was growing right out of a wall and it’s aerial roots taking up space in it’s own way as per its need. Whether the wall was built around it or the tree just kept pushing, it was clear the wall was in its way. It was a huge obstruction, stopping the tree from growing naturally. But despite that, something deep inside the tree kept pushing it to grow, to reach beyond the limited space it was given, and to become its full self that it was meant to be influenced by its nature. And even though a part of its trunk looked a little damaged, it had still grown and found its own space, despite the obstacles.
This tree made me think about people. We see similar situations in human lives: sometimes, the environment or the circumstances a person grows up in can truly hinder their smooth growth and development, leaving them damaged or significantly affected. Yet, just like the Banyan tree, something profound within that person often continues to push them forward, enabling them to sail through. Yes, this journey can bring immense stress, trauma, or severe setbacks. But there is an undeniable power in the human spirit, an inherent drive to be one’s true, authentic self, that enables individuals to push through adversity, even if it takes considerable time and effort.
So, is it nature or nurture that pushes them through in these tough times? It’s not always simple. While our inner strength (nature) is vital, that very strength can be fueled and magnified by positive nurture – a strong support system, opportunities to overcome problems, or just a generally supportive environment. Or, sometimes, it’s the simple choices the individual makes, drawing on that inner resilience, that help them push through.
This highlights a crucial point: the journey of growth, especially when facing big challenges, can be incredibly difficult and painful if left solely to the individual. But when that journey is supported by a positive, uplifting environment and a caring community, those challenges can become much easier to navigate. Our collective role in supporting and elevating people is therefore incredibly important.
